The Sierra Leone Motor Drivers and General Transport Workers Union (SLMD & GTWU) has successfully concluded its 2025 National Elections at St. Anthony’s Parish Hall in Freetown, marking a pivotal moment in the union’s democratic process.
The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) officially announced that the presidential race will proceed to a runoff as two candidates, Abdullai Bah and Ibrahim Shall, each secured 68 votes, while the third candidate, Abu Saidu, trailed with 20 votes. The date for the runoff is yet to be announced.
Security officials and stakeholders commended the peaceful conduct of the quinquennial elections. Speaking at the event, Aruna Sesay, Western Region Provincial Security Coordinator of the Office of National Security (ONS), noted the importance of the union in national development.
“We have regularly engaged the union during disputes to build peace. When there is peace, progress follows. The Drivers Union plays a vital role in this country’s transportation sector,” he stated.
Deputy Regional Commander for Freetown West, ACP Esther M. Saffa, urged delegates to remain calm and maintain peace throughout the electoral process.
“I am happy to witness this election today and to see women participating as delegates. This is a welcome change from the past, where only men were involved. The police and drivers must continue to work together in unity,” she emphasized.
Outgoing union president Alpha Amadu Bah, who served two terms since his election in July 2019, delivered an emotional farewell address.
“Today marks both a proud and emotional moment as I step down. Together, we built the National Secretariat Building in Freetown — a symbol of our union’s strength,” he said.
He highlighted major achievements during his tenure, including the promotion of road safety awareness through education programs.
“An informed driver is a safer driver. Our initiatives are saving lives,” Bah stated, calling on members to support the new leadership and continue fostering unity.
The election was observed by ECSL officials, police personnel, and other stakeholders, and was widely praised for its transparency and organization.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming runoff election between Bah and Shall, union members and stakeholders are hopeful that the next leadership will build on the foundation laid and continue advocating for drivers’ welfare and industry reform.
