The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) on Monday launched the first-ever Service Women’s Day, an initiative aimed at advancing gender equality and empowering women in uniform.
The ceremony, held at the Myohaung Officers’ Mess, Wilberforce Barracks, brought together senior military officials, government representatives, and gender advocates under the theme “Empowering Women in Uniform.”
Presidential Adviser on Gender, Mrs. Isatu Jabbie Kabba, delivered the keynote address, commending the RSLAF for institutionalizing a platform to recognize female personnel. She urged the military leadership to expand opportunities for training, leadership, and career advancement for women.
Deputy Minister of Defence, Colonel (Rtd) Brima Muana Massaquoi, reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting women in the armed forces. He said empowering women was not only a moral responsibility but also “a strategic necessity for strengthening national security.”
The declaration of purpose was presented by Colonel Dr. Thomosia George, the longest-serving female officer in RSLAF. Reflecting on her decades of service, she acknowledged progress made but stressed the need for greater efforts to break barriers and enable women to reach top command positions.
The event featured prayers, goodwill messages, and group photographs. Organizers said the annual Service Women’s Day will serve as a permanent platform for recognizing the contributions of women in the military and reinforcing their role in peace and security.
