President Julius Maada Bio recognises Christians worldwide observing Ash Wednesday today. He said the solemn occasion serves as a reminder of human mortality and the call to repentance. Marking the beginning of the Lenten season, the day emphasizes humility, self-examination, and spiritual renewal.
Priests administer ashes in the shape of a cross on worshippers’ foreheads, accompanied by the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” The ritual underscores the transient nature of human life and the need for faith and reflection.
President Bio reflecting on this year, Ash Wednesday said it coincides with the start of Women’s History Month, prompting many faithful to integrate themes of empowerment and service into their Lenten commitments. Church leaders encourage believers to use the 40-day period for acts of kindness, prayer, and fasting, reinforcing the connection between faith and social responsibility.
Lent will culminate in Holy Week, leading up to Easter Sunday on March 31, when Christians commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
