In a direct response to the ongoing drug crisis in Sierra Leone, Minister of Youth Affairs Ibrahim Sannoh has taken emergency action to rescue more than 41 young people suffering from the effects of kush, a highly addictive synthetic drug.
The victims, from Central Freetown and the Susan’s Bay area, have been admitted to Connaught Hospital. Minister Sannoh is personally financing their medical treatment and meals, according to a statement from the Ministry of Youth Affairs.

The move is part of the government’s broader anti-drug initiative aimed at curbing kush abuse among young people. Once stabilized, the victims will be enrolled in government-led vocational training programs intended to support their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
“These young people deserve a second chance,” Minister Sannoh said during a visit to the hospital. “It’s not enough to talk. We must lead with action.”
The Ministry’s response comes amid growing public concern over the rise in kush-related incidents and fatalities, especially in urban communities. The initiative marks a shift toward direct intervention and support, rather than punitive measures alone.

Authorities say the rescue and rehabilitation effort signals a renewed commitment by the government to address the root causes of drug abuse and provide sustainable alternatives for at-risk youth.
