Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has announced that Koidu Holdings Limited has assured her they will formally accept the demands presented during a peaceful protest held in Koidu City, Kono District.
The protest, which took place on March 4, 2025, saw the First Lady joining workers of the diamond mining company to advocate for improved working conditions.
The workers’ key demands include official recognition of their union, a 30% salary increase, living allowances, overtime compensation, provision of safe drinking water, and financial autonomy.
In a statement following the protest, Dr. Bio emphasized her commitment to ensuring these demands are met, stating she will remain in Kono until a satisfactory response is received.
She urged Koidu Holdings’ workers to maintain peace while awaiting the company’s formal response.

She also called for peaceful coexistence among employees and management should the demands be met, highlighting that the goal is to enhance service conditions without fostering grudges or discord within the community.
